Umbilical Cord Products

Umbilical cord blood contains a form of pluripotent stem cells called mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), which can differentiate into a variety of cell types including cartilage, bone and fat tissue. Because of this, it is believed they can be used for the same applications as bone marrow. Cord blood also offers several advantages: collection is less invasive, cord blood stem cells expand more rapidly, they can differentiate into multiple cell types more easily since they are “younger” than bone marrow stem cells, they are less immunogenic and can escape the host immune surveillance, and they have shown more than 1,000-fold expanding capacity compared with bone marrow-derived stem cells (BMAC).

These characteristics are especially important for cartilage repair, as one of the key issues researchers face is having a readily available source of stem cells that are highly proliferative and still in their most “immature” state.

A 2015 study in The Journal of Orthopedic Research demonstrated hUCB-MSCs as an effective therapy in cartilage repair.
