Sensory Rejuvenation Fast

09 Feb Sensory Rejuvenation Fast

The Amazing Weekly Protocol to Invigorate Your Inner Ear and General Energy Reserves.

Dr. John Lieurance’s “Sensory Rejuvenation Fast” is a technique to invigorate your inner ears.

Purpose: Amplifying Inner Ear Wellness through fasting through weekly 24-36 hour fasts.

  • Maximizing cellular energy prior to the fast, to support the inner ear.
  • Assisting the Autophagy & Mitophagy signaling response using Senolytics for inner ear wellness.
  • Stimulating a growth phase via stem cell and Hormetic Response within the inner ear.
  • Stimulating Microbiome Swarming and bacteria diversity post fast, which improves gut function, calming neuro-inflammation & supporting the inner ear.
  • Improve stem cell survival during re-feeding, as stem cells are released and can be attracted to damaged inner ear structures.

Dr. John Lieurance’s “Sensory Rejuvenation Protocol” is a technique to invigorate your inner ears. This is done through improving and renewing your mitochondria. Mitochondria are intracellular powerhouses that produce Adenosine triphosphate, (ATP), the currency of energy in our body. One third of your body weight is made up of the mitochondria within your cells. These little structures sit inside each of your cells, where they convert glucose and oxygen to create all of the energy needed to run every aspect of your cellular functions, including your inner ear.

In this article, we will be discussing a protocol founded on science to care for your mitochondria and inner ear. Taking care of your mitochondria can potentially make positive changes to your hearing, balance and alleviate tinnitus as well as general health and longevity! Studies show mitochondria function can impact the quality and length of your life in almost every way you can consider. A worthwhile effort indeed! We will dig into a few technical subjects such as Autophagy, Mitophagy, Cellular Senescence, and  NAD+.

Let’s get into it and make sense of this six-day protocol!

Sensory Rejuvenation Protocol is a six-day program. The first two days are focused on Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD+) loading, and the next two days focus on activating Mitophagy, Autophagy and cleaning up Senescent Cells. This cleaning and recycling of mitochondria and old, weak zombie cells, is done using Senolytics, and a 24 hour fast from lunch to lunch. The last 2 days are for activation of stem cells for repair and regeneration.

NAD+ Loading Phase – Phase 1

First, let’s discuss why you might want to supplement with NAD+.

NAD+ is a sister to Niacin, which is a vital vitamin that you cannot live without. NAD+ is a critical coenzyme found in every cell in your body, and it is involved in hundreds of metabolic processes. Maintenance of an optimal NAD+/NADH ratio is essential for mitochondrial function. The maintenance of the mitochondrial NAD+ pool is of crucial importance. From plants to metazoans, an increase in intracellular levels of NAD+ directs cells to make adjustments to ensure survival, including increasing energy production and utilization, boosting cellular repair, and coordinating circadian rhythms.  By the time we are middle-aged, levels of NAD+ will have fallen to half of our youthful levels. In recent years, several studies have shown that the treatment of old mice with precursors to NAD+ can greatly improve health. Observed effects include increased insulin sensitivity, a reversal of mitochondrial dysfunction, reduced stem cell senescence, and lifespan extension.

Here are a couple of studies on NAD+ and Hearing Loss:

Short-term NAD+ supplementation prevents hearing loss in mouse models.1

Euler-Chelpin, in his 1930 Nobel Prize speech, says, “NAD+ is one of the most widespread and biologically most important activators within the plant and animal world.” 3

https://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/chemistry/laureates/1929/euler-chelpin-lecture.pdf

NAD+ levels are related to the expression of NF-κB 4, and low-grade inflammation is a primary driving force of aging. A possibility is that addressing inflammation is the answer to slowing the aging process. Doctors in the know and scientists in the field all conclude that molecules that maintain NAD+ levels, will allow people to celebrate many more anniversaries. Inflammation is not just linked to aging, but is present and involved in almost all disease processes.

NAD+ levels naturally decline with age, and various stressors can deplete your NAD+ at a more rapid rate. Poor restorative sleep and alcohol use are the top two stressors that deplete NAD+; however, any stressor will drain away NAD+. Anytime you have a higher energy demand; immune activation due to infection stress, mental stress, emotional stress, physical stress, structural stress, electromagnetic (EMF’s) stress, and chemical stress are the main “Stress” categories. We cannot avoid these completely, and so, inevitably, our NAD+ levels will be taxed, creating a need to replace NAD+.

In this article titled “Why NAD+ Declines during Aging: It’s Destroyed,” the author states, ’”NAD+ is required not only for life but for a long life…the decline of NAD+ during aging, with implications for combating age-related diseases.” 4

I don’t advocate ignoring underlying stressors driving inflammation and only supplementing with NAD+, but approaching it from both sides… well, you might be looking at the future of medicine.

Autophagy, Clearing & Cleaning – Phase 2

Mitochondrial dysfunction is a hallmark of metabolic decline (vitality) during aging. Ref. You’re constantly replacing your old, weak, dysfunctional mitochondria with new healthy fresh mitochondria. The population of all the mitochondria of a given cell constitutes your Chondriome.  Like your MicroBiome, we have a healthy pool of them or an unhealthy pool, which dictates how functional they are.  The average cell in your body has between 1,000-2,000 mitochondria. Again, they turn over as they get old. They are recycled, and it’s a process medicated through a gene expression ruled by mTOR.

The mTOR pathway is a central regulator of metabolism (vitality) and physiology (function). When mTOR is inhibited, we shift into a cleaning and recycling phase where we see Autophagy and Mitophagy. Autophagy is a Latin word that translates into “self-eating.” Autophagy is the body’s way of cleaning out damaged cells in order to regenerate newer, healthier cells.

Mitophagy is the selective degradation of mitochondria by autophagy. It often occurs to defective mitochondria following damage or stress.10

Remember all of the types of stress? They ALL have an impact on the demand for Mitophagy to be activated through mTOR!11 So what activates mTOR and Autophagy? Fasting is the primary activator of this process! We will revisit this soon, but first, we need to talk about senescent cells.

What are senescent cells, and how do they have a detrimental effect on health and life span?

Basically, cellular senescence is a permanent state of sleep a cell goes into. This state is associated with a release of inflammatory products, and higher energy consumption, pulling it away from your healthy cells.12 They are zombies in the literal sense!

Senescent cells accumulate due to poor Autophagy which normally removes and recycles them into fresh, healthy cells and fresh, healthy mitochondria.

Cellular senescence is an irreversible cell-cycle arrest mechanism that acts to protect against cancer. Ref.

Fig 1

Production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, is emerging as a common feature of senescent cells irrespective of the senescence-inducing stressor or mechanism (Fig. 1).

Cultured cells usually reach senescence within several weeks after exposure, to senescence-inducing stressors, but remain viable for months after that.  Ref

This means these “zombies” will float around spewing inflammation and sucking the life out of your body, by deferring vital energy that would normally be going to healthy cells. In this study scientists found that fasting reduced hearing loss through autophagy.

The Antioxidative Role of Autophagy in Hearing Loss. Ref 14

So what is the answer? How do you clear these senescent cells from your body?

It just so happens to be the same process as Autophagy and Mitophagy, where mTOR is involved. Fasting and Senolytics are the best answer to clean, clear, and recycle these “zombie” cells. This is why we stack the most powerful senolytics on the planet with a 24-hour lunch to lunch fast that can be done each week or pulsed as directed by your health care provider.

Lastly the Stem Cell Activation Phase! Phase 3

After the break down of the cleaning / autophagy phase, the body and your inner ears are ready for growth and repair. mTOR positively regulates cell growth and proliferation, by promoting many anabolic processes, including biosynthesis of proteins, lipids and organelles such as mitochondria.  Journel (1)

Growing new mitochondria is called mitochondrial biogenesis, and mTOR activates this very powerfully!

Mitochondrial metabolism and biogenesis are both regulated by mTOR activation. (Schieke et al., 2006)

Protein is the most effective activator of phase 3. I suggest you increase your protein intake to 20 grams or more per day using highly absorbable forms of protein. In addition to protein supplementation, your diet should consist of fish, chicken and steak in 2 of the 3 meals in phase 3 (or both meals if you’re only eating 2 times a day). For protein supplementation, Perfect Aminos is a good and highly absorbable form of protein and is tolerable to most. 4 scoops per day will do. In addition the specific protein that activates growth and repair is Leucine.  StemTOR suppositories activate mTOR, and have a high and super absorbable way to get leucine into your blood stream. In addition to Leucine there are a few nutraceuticals that have been shown to be great activators of growth and repair.

HMB (Methionine Hydroxyl Analogue Butanoic Acid) is a powerful activator of mTOR.  Studies show supplementation with HMB show a significant increase in the anaerobic peak power, average power, maximum speed, post-exercise lactate concentrations, a significant increase in fat-free mass and a reduction in the fat.(3)

Rhodiola- Encourages a healthy response to physical activity and mental emotional stress, by supporting stress hormones such as cortisol, the main stress hormone.  Rhodiola enhances the anabolic effects of training and exercise and minimizes the catabolic (tissue breakdown) effect of high stress hormones, like cortisol.

Optional Upgrade #1 for Phase 3: Microbiome swarming.

The role of fasting and melatonin on microbiome health & swarming

Poor quality gut microbiota is highly associated with both acute or chronic diseases, in particular digestive disorders including inflammatory bowel disease, liver cirrhosis and colorectal cancer, and thus is responsible for the unrelenting increase in so-called diseases-of-affluence. Ref. Fasting can be a great way to reset your microbiome through a healthy stress called hormesis. Fasting has been shown to improve obesity and multiple sclerosis in experimental model through restoring gut microbiota  Ref  Ref

Microbiome swarming to stimulate more growth of the good bacteria. Using melatonin supplementation may be the answer. Your gut produces 400 times more melatonin than your brain. Ref Gut melatonin is the main activator of microbiome swarming which is the primary signaling for the good bacteria in your gut to grow in numbers. Ref

One research study ‘Human Gut Bacteria are Sensitive to Melatonin and Express Endogenous Circadian Rhythmicity’ published in the PLoS One in 2016 has stated that “Melatonin specifically increases the magnitude of swarming in cultures of E. aerogenes, but not in Escherichia coli or Klebsiella pneumoniae.” Ref  This study was focused on assessing the impact of the body’s circadian rhythms on gut health. Circadian rhythm is the fundamental property of most eukaryotes including humans, animals, plants, and even fungi. In vertebrates like humans, the digestive system expresses a strong circadian pattern hard linked to melatonin. Recent studies suggest that the gut flora, which is composed of trillions of healthy bacteria is regulated primarily by the circadian clock of the body. And this circadian rhythm, in turn, is regulated by how much melatonin is secreted in your body and at what times.  Melatonin has been shown to specifically increase the magnitude of swarming in the cultures of E. aerogenes, though not in other species like in Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli. The swarming appeared to occur on a daily basis by the body’s circadian rhythm synchronized perfectly in the presence of melatonin. Ref

I have used larger than typical melatonin dosages in the 100-200mg plus to activate microbiome swarming. Using melatonin in a suppository makes sense for this action as the microbiome primarily exists in your large intestines so placing the melatonin there may lead to more of a swarming effect.  Sandman™ suppository is our go to product as an optional upgrade to the “Sensory Rejuvenation Fast” during the post fasting / re-feeding phase. This can be taken for 2 days up to a week or longer post fast as microbiome support.

The “Sensory Rejuvenation Fast” is easy to do and well tolerated by most. The Phases can be done once a week, once a month, or a few times a year if you desire a less aggressive approach. I generally suggest to start a once a week program and consider this initially for a few months and for some a full 3 day fast during phase 2 might be more effective than the 24-36 hr fast suggested in this article.. After an initial loading program, one might consider switching to doing “Sensory Rejuvenation Fast” a couple of times a year for a maintenance plan.

Phase 3 Optional Upgrade #2: Stem Cell Support.

When activate mTOR this means growth, repair and Stem Cells being produced as well as released into your circulation where they will be attracted to injuries, weak tissues, glands and organs in need of repair. Stem cells are  also vulnerable to becoming senescent. This is a real problem in regenerative medicine today. We are one of the first clinic to begin using stem cells for our patients here in the US and for example if we would aspirate some bone marrow from your pelvic bone then place those stem cells into your knee joint only a certain percentage of those would survive and the others would become senescent essentially becoming useless. Stem cell survival is a real problem for doctors like us and using techniques to provide a better “home” or an environment that would provide the stem cells more support to proliferate and differentiate to repair and regenerate your body. There are a few substances that have been shown to be a great support to stem cells. CoQ 10 and Fucoidan are 2 of my favorite! CoQ 10 is a powerful anti oxidant and Fucoidan is a polysaccharide from brown seaweed. Evidence of both Fucoidan and CoQ-10 with the prevention of stem cell senescence is clear, which allows more stem cells to do the regenerative work on your body. CoQ10 has shown to protect stem cell aging and mechanisms of cell senescence inhibited by CoQ10. Ref  Fucoidan Rescues Mesenchymal Stem Cells from Cellular Senescence and increases stem cell proliferation through the regulation of cell cycle-associated proteins. Ref CoQ-10 has been shown to have poor absorption orally, so a suppository route can allow much higher bioavailability of CoQ-10. There is benefit to using these nutrients post fast so that when your new stem cells are released more of them will survive. See StemZen™ a CoQ 10 plus Fucoidan suppository.

Bullet Points:

PHASE 1 -NAD+ Loading to Support Mitochondrial Health and Cellular Energy.

(Can be helpful leading into a fast or period of strong autophagy signaling phase).

  1. Take NAD+Max Suppositories with NAD+, NR (Nicotinamide Riboside) and NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide). 2 suppositories per day for 2 days.
  2. Use liposomal NAD+ products such as NADMax Ultra.
  3. NeuroNAD+ Nasal Spray- 2 sprays each nostril 3 times a day.

PHASE 2 -Maximize Autophagy:

  • Fasting. Extended or intermittent fasting works at different signaling strengths. Do a 24 hour fast.
  • Consume senolytics like Fisetin, Quercetin and Resveratrol which can be taken as liposomal and suppository for better absorption. Take Lucitol Ultra (10ml 2 times a day) or Lucitol Suppository (1 2 times a day) for 2 days.
  • Exercise can promote autophagy.
  • Consume foods, spices and teas to promote autophagy like ginger, coffee, green tea, elderberries, turmeric, ginseng tea, garlic, chaga, reishi, pomegranate and ceylon cinnamon.
  •  Use ozone to increase ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) to activate autophagy in the form of IV of ozone in the Clinic.

PHASE 3 – Maximize mTOR After a Fast.

  • Consume more protein. Best with shakes post fasting versus steak might be too difficult to break down just after fasting. Take 20 gm of Perfect Amino’s for 2 days and consume fish, chicken or beef for 2 meals a day for 2 days.
  • Take supplements like Leucine, Rhodiola, HMB.  StemTOR – 1-2 times a day for 2 days.
  • Optional: Take a Spore based Probiotic and supplement using high dose melatonin to increase the microbiome swarming effect.

Sensory Rejuvenation Protocol

Purpose: Amplifying Regeneration to the Inner Ear.

  • Building back Cellular NAD+ levels for Mitochondrial support.
  • Assisting the Autophagy & Mitophagy signaling response using Senolytics.
  • Stimulating a growth phase via stem cell and Hormetic response.
  • Stimulating microbiome swarming and bacteria diversity post fast.

NAD+ Loading phase 1 – Day 1-2

Use NAD+Max in the NAD+ Loading Phase. Increase cellular energy therefore a stronger stimulus to autophagy and ultimately better results for your fasting.

Or:

Fasting Phase 2: Senolytic & Autophagy Phase – Day 3-4

Lucitol – A powerful senolytic to activate greater Autophagy to clear out senescent cells and dysfunctional mitochondria.

  • Lucitol Suppository 2 times a days. After morning bowel movement and later in the day. (Substitute to suppository)

Or:

Growth & Repair Phase 3 – Day 5–6

Maximize Stem Cell Production through mTOR signaling, Microbiome Swarming and Prevent Stem Cell Senesence Post Fast.

  1. Consume more protein. Best with shakes post fasting versus steak might be too diff to break down just after fasting. Take essential amino acids such as Perfect Amino’s.
  2. Take supplements like Rhodiola, HMB, Deer Antler Extract, Astragalus, Fo-Ti or StemTOR
  3. Protect Stem Cells using Fucoidan, CoQ-10 and Rehmannia or take StemZen.
  4. Take a high dose of melatonin to increase the microbiome swarming effect.

My Best Suggestion to follow the first 3 months!

I recommend this protocol weekly for 3 months. Include a 3 day fast once a month “ done with a 3 day water fast” (4 hour feeding window alternative) and the 24-36 hour the other 3 weeks. Sensory Rejuvenation Fast is done for 3 days for each phase. Phase 2 should be done with a 3 day water fast (4 hour feeding window alternative).

Supporting your mitochondria will support your inner ears which can lead to improve hearing, better balance and improve symptoms of tinnitus. Lifestyle changes like a scientific based fast can lead to better and stronger mitochondria. Restoring youthful NAD+ levels, using cellular clean up and recycling such as Autophagy and Mitophagy followed by a strong stem cell activation can be a great strategy. Microbiome swarming for gut health calms down neuro inflammation helping the nerves in the ear. The Sensory Rejuvenation Protocol is easy to do and tolerated by most. The Sensory Rejuvenation Protocol for LumoMed support should be done once a week for 3 months, then 1 time a month for another 9 months. If you’re getting LumoMed laser therapy monthly, it will be best to come in for LumoMed treatment during phase 3.
